You've been invited to complete a video interview - congratulations! This guide will walk you through the entire process, from clicking the link in your invitation email to submitting your final responses.
Before you start: We recommend reading our Before Recording Your Interview and Troubleshooting Video Interview Issues articles to prepare yourself for success.
Note: The screenshots and steps below show an example interview. Your actual interview may differ slightly depending on how the employer has configured it.
You'll receive an email invitation from the employer with all the important details about your video interview:
- Deadline: The date by which you must submit your interview (e.g., "Please submit by 2025-11-05")
- Time estimate: How long the interview should take (typically 10-15 minutes)
- What to expect: Number of questions, that you'll record responses using your camera and microphone, and where to complete it
When you're ready to begin, click the Start my interview button in the email. You can return to this link at any time if you need to pause.
After clicking the link, you'll land on an overview page that shows:
What to expect
- Number of interview questions
- Camera and microphone setup testing
- Approximate time to complete
- Option to retake answers (if available)
Technical requirements
- Working camera for video recording
- Clear microphone for audio recording
- Stable internet connection
- Modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari)
Once you've reviewed this information, click Continue to Device Setup.
You'll now be taken to the Device Setup page where you can test your equipment before starting the interview.
-
Test your setup: Click the Test Camera & Microphone button to begin testing.
-
Allow browser access: When prompted, click Allow to give the website permission to use your camera and microphone. You'll see a popup asking "Use camera and microphone?" - select Allow this time or Allow while visiting the site.
- Select your devices: In the Device Settings panel on the right, use the dropdown menus to choose your preferred camera and microphone if you have multiple options.
- Check your video: You'll see yourself on camera - ensure the lighting is good and you're positioned correctly.
- Check your audio: Speak normally and watch the microphone indicator bar fill up as you talk. This confirms your audio is working.
- Wait for confirmation: Once testing is complete, you'll see a green message saying "All tests passed!"
If your tests don't pass or you're experiencing issues, refer to our Troubleshooting Video Interview Issues article.
When everything is working properly, click Start Interview.
Now you're ready to record your responses! Here's how each question works:
Understanding the Question Screen
- Progress indicator: At the top, you'll see which question you're on (e.g., "Question 1 of 3") and your overall progress percentage
- Time limit: Each question shows the maximum recording time (e.g., "2:00 max")
- Retakes available: You'll see how many retakes you can record for each question (e.g., "Retake left: 2")
- The question: Read the question carefully before recording
- Video preview: You'll see yourself on camera
Recording Your Answer
- Read the question: Take your time to understand what's being asked.
- Prepare your response: Think about what you want to say. Some questions may give you "think time" before recording starts automatically.
-
Start recording: Click Press record to start (or recording may begin automatically after think time).
- Deliver your answer: Speak clearly and confidently. Keep an eye on the timer to ensure you stay within the time limit.
- Review your recording: After recording, you can watch your answer back.
-
Decide whether to keep or retake:
- Click Use this video if you're happy with your answer
- Click Retake video if you want to record again (if retakes are available)
- Move to the next question: Click Next Question to continue.
Important tips while recording:
- Look at the camera, not at yourself on screen
- Speak at a natural pace and volume
- Don't worry if you make a small mistake - keep going!
- Use your full time allowance if needed - it's better to give a complete answer
Repeat Step 4 for each question in the interview. You'll see your progress update as you go:
- The progress bar at the top fills up as you complete more questions
- The question counter updates (e.g., "Question 2 of 3", "Question 3 of 3")
- The number of completed questions increases (e.g., "2 completed")
When you reach the final question, you'll see a Complete Interview button instead of "Next Question".
After answering all questions, click Complete Interview to submit your responses to the employer.
You'll see a confirmation screen with:
- A green checkmark and "Interview Submitted!" message
- Confirmation of which role and company your interview was for
-
What happens next: Information about the next steps, typically including:
- The hiring team will review your responses
- When you can expect to hear back (e.g., within 3-5 business days)
- Whether there may be additional interviews
Once you've submitted your interview:
- You'll receive a confirmation email acknowledging your submission
- Your responses are now with the hiring team for review
- The employer will contact you about next steps within their specified timeframe
Good luck with your interview! Remember to be yourself and show your enthusiasm for the role.
