Step-by-step guide to completing your video interview

You've been invited to complete an AI-led interview — congratulations! This guide walks you through every step of the process, from the invitation email through to submitting your interview.

Before you start: Make sure you're in a quiet, well-lit space with a stable internet connection, and that you're using a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).

Note: The screenshots below show an example interview. Your actual interview may look slightly different depending on how the employer has configured it.

Step 1: Check Your Email Invitation

You'll receive an email from the employer letting you know you've been shortlisted and inviting you to complete a video interview. The email will include:

  • Deadline: The date and time by which you must complete the interview (e.g. "within the next 48 hours")
  • Role and company: Confirmation of the position you've applied for
  • What to expect: A note that you'll be speaking with an AI Interviewer who will ask you questions and listen to your spoken responses

Important

Your interview link has an expiry date. Make sure you complete your interview before the deadline shown in the email — applications without a completed interview will not progress.

When you're ready to begin, click the Start Interview Setup button in the email.

Step 2: Set Up Your Camera and Microphone

Clicking the link takes you to the Device Setup page. This is where you confirm your camera, microphone, and audio output are all working before the interview begins.

  1. Grant browser permissions: Your browser will show a popup asking permission to use your camera and microphone. Select Allow while visiting the site or Allow this time. Without these permissions the interview cannot proceed.
  2. Select your devices: Use the dropdown menus on the right-hand Device Setup panel to choose your preferred Sound Output, Microphone, and Camera. If you only have one of each, they will be selected automatically.
  3. Check your video: Your camera preview appears on the left. Make sure you're well-lit and centred in frame.
  4. Test your microphone: Speak normally and watch the bar below the video labelled Speak to test your microphone — it should respond to your voice. If it stays flat, check that the correct microphone is selected.
  5. Wait for the green confirmation: Once all three devices are verified, you'll see a "Everything looks good!" message at the bottom of the screen with a green tick, and the Continue to Waiting Room button will become active.

Tip

If your devices aren't being detected, try refreshing the page, checking your browser's privacy settings, or switching to a different browser. See our Troubleshooting Video Interview Issues article for more help.

Once you see the green confirmation, click Continue to Waiting Room.

Step 3: Review the Interview Screen and Start

You'll arrive at the interview waiting room. Your video feed fills the main area of the screen, and the AI Interviewer panel appears on the right-hand side with a welcome message explaining how the interview will work.

Understanding the screen

  • Your video feed: Your camera appears in the centre of the screen with a REC indicator once recording begins
  • AI Interviewer panel: The conversation transcript appears on the right — questions and responses are logged here so you can refer back at any time
  • Media controls: Three icons on the left side of the video let you adjust your sound output, microphone, and camera if needed
  • Microphone Level: A bar below your video shows your audio activity in real time
  • Timer: Once the interview starts, a timer in the top-right corner shows how long you've been going
  • Recording indicator: A red Recording badge appears in the top-right when the interview is active
  • Interview Guide: A purple Interview Guide button in the top-right corner gives you an overview of all screen features at any time

Important

Recording begins as soon as you click Start Interview. Make sure you are settled, in a quiet space, and ready before clicking the button.

When you're ready, click the Start Interview button at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Meet Your AI Interviewer

Once you click Start Interview, the AI Interviewer will greet you by name, introduce itself as your AI Recruitment Assistant, and give you a brief overview of how the interview will work. The AI avatar appears as a small tile in the bottom-right corner of your video feed.

The AI will ask if you're ready to get started. Simply speak your response aloud — the AI will hear you and move to the first question.

Good to know

You can ask the AI to repeat a question or move on to the next one at any time during the interview — just say so out loud.

Step 5: Answer Each Question

The AI Interviewer will ask you a series of questions one at a time. Each question also appears in the transcript panel on the right so you can read along.

How the conversation works

  • Listen, then speak: The AI will ask a question aloud. Take a moment to gather your thoughts, then respond naturally as you would in a real conversation.
  • Follow-up questions: The AI may ask a follow-up question to explore your answer further. This is completely normal — it's an opportunity to elaborate or add detail.
  • No rushing needed: The AI waits for you to finish speaking before it responds. There's no countdown timer on individual questions.
  • Repeat or skip: At any point, tell the AI to "repeat the question" or "move on" and it will do so.

Tips for a great interview

  • Speak clearly and at a natural pace
  • Look at your camera rather than at your own image on screen
  • Give complete answers — a brief pause before responding is fine
  • Don't worry about small mistakes — just keep going
  • If you want to add something after a follow-up, feel free to continue
Step 6: End the Interview

After all structured questions have been asked, the AI Interviewer will let you know and may open the floor for any questions you have about the role or company. If you don't have questions, simply let the AI know and it will wrap up.

What the AI can and can't answer

The AI Interviewer can answer common questions about the role such as employment type, working hours, and workplace type. For questions beyond its knowledge, it will let you know and suggest you follow up directly with the employer.

Once the conversation is complete, click the red End Call button at the bottom of the AI Interviewer panel. Your recording is automatically saved and submitted to the employer — there is nothing further you need to do.

Step 7: Completion and Feedback

After ending the call, you'll see an Interview Complete! confirmation screen. This page shows:

  • Confirmation that your recording has been saved
  • The total recording duration
  • An optional star rating and comment field so you can share feedback on your experience

You can either Submit Feedback or click Skip to finish. Either way, your interview has already been submitted to the hiring team.

What happens next?

The hiring team will review your responses and be in touch about next steps within their specified timeframe. Keep an eye on your inbox for further communication from the employer.

Good luck with your interview! Be yourself and show your enthusiasm for the role.
